First of all, in all unrelated things, I want to talk about taboos of having the same surnames for a marriage. David Tan and Kelly Tan - how come both Tan can get married? Shouldn’t they look at Chinese Marriage Problems 101 before making that proposal. Assuming both hokkien lang, shouldn’t that be an even bigger problem? Nevermind, if you are a hip and modern fella, perhaps it is okay. But I bet it won’t stop tongue wagging thereafter.
Okay now back to the the question posed on the topic. Have we been conned? I have been following this case a bit since my missus initially questioned me why are people’s proposal so god damm romantic while mine was almost inexistent. I mean I sort of did propose, but it was more along the line like, if you choose to marry me, this is what I will provide for you. A bit of a sales and purchases agreement, along those lines, and really nothing romantic.
Being romantic and being wasteful usually comes hand in hand. I believe that if you have it, flaunt it. But if your parents have it, let them flaunt it. A 26 years old could not have possibly made enough to buy a RM14,000 diamond ring and a RM40,000 billboard. Okay, maybe he is a capable guy. But with capable guys, it would mean that you need to spend on other essentials as well. Like a good car, a good accomodation, a good everything. So where do you find CASH? Yeah, those two items I doubt you can get a interest free instalment plan.
But what most would have been eluded of is the fact that our friend here has pulled one of the biggest publicity stunt. Yes, how else could you get to the front page of newspaper (while Badawi has dissolved parliament, announced election date and planning for General Election 2008) and telling the world how much it costs. Okay maybe he lied a bit. He told you RM40,000 but in reality with discounts thrown in, it is much more less than that. Maybe he felt much better if the value is higher and that way, you other loser guys like me will feel bad coz our proposal only costs like RM54. No K at the back, mate.
And the girl? Maybe if she has been any smarter she would tell him off. Spend so much for what? Can pay down payment for a good sized bungalow already. And tell him to come back with a better and more cost effective proposal. But if he justify it by saying it is all in all a publicity stunt, kill him off. Wah, you taking a proposal a sort of publicity stunt? Of course it is. Why else you think he wants to show off his face and his fiancee’s face on national newspaper.
You think it is romantic? I think it is a waste of public media space to even talk about them. No wonder people says rich people can get away with everything. ptoooi!

My bf is from the adv. industry and what he learnt was that, apparently, this guy’s dad owns the billboard co. I doubt he has to pay for the space. He only has to book, at the expense of his dad losing a day of income for that board from a legitimate advertiser.
ah, something which I forgot to incorporate into my case. I was told the same story and it was the actual reason why i wrote the above post. But something happened to my cranium that I forgot to incorporate it into it.
Anyways, I believe that he wants some attention to bring more business to his dad’s company as well. I mean afterall, who else wouldn’t know who David Tan is after this. 15 minutes of fame on all national newspaper and he has shown how billboard has the power to be a good advertising medium.
The money should have been better spent. Doesn’t seem romantic to have spent RM40,000 on a billboard just to propose to someone. I share the same sentiments.
Yes, the power of advertising. Like you say mate. Who’s not going to know David Tan, the guy who spent RM54k on a wedding proposal.
Though I am curious to know and I firmly believe that most women would have preferred a RM40k diamond ring instead.
yea, reading the news I was thinking to myself that this guy did not really paid RM40k on the billboard. Common sense will tell you that if you have RM40k to spend, you would probably spend it on the ring. And the wife face would not be so happy to see a RM14k ring while standing below the billboard advert that cost RM40k. She should have said ‘No’ if this was true, who would want to marry a guy this dumb.. so in conclusion, he did not really pay RM40k for the billboard.
WTF???
Most women who would prefer a 40k ring = high class whores
Guy who spends 40k/54k just to “get” a woman = doormat
Women who fall for such shit = Dumb Whores but a whore nevertheless
Sheesh….
Where’s integrity or at least common sense?
don’t forget, all billboards in PJ are unlicensed… someone should tear them all down…
Women is women… Women like romantic. I have a female friend said this is a waste, “he” should use the money to spend on something than this. But when I ask her if she like fresh flower or plastic flower from her BF, her answer was: “Of cos I like fresh flowers, it shows that he love me for “real”!! OMG, I tot she will say plastic flowers live longer than fresh flowers only 2 days…
you see, man tends to lies but to cheat on your future wife is the WORST case…
where got billboard cost 40K nowadays for that freaking size?? Just admit that it is FILLER ads only… why want to show off? Just imagine… thousand of people still suffer for NO FOOD and DRINKS to SURVIVE… Here at Malaysia got some bustard showing off his Jewerly and so called ROMANTIC shits to Malaysia… what a JOKE!!
