This is the STORY that you all want to hear. Here’s the supposedly version of what had happened.
It appeared so when workers of Mr Ng Siak Hai’s bak kut teh shop snubbed Mr Donald Tsang, the Hong Kong Chief Executive.
Mr Tsang wanted to taste pork ribs soup during his recent visit to Singapore.
The well-known Ng Ah Sio Pork Ribs Soup Eating House at Rangoon Road was picked. But he could only make it at 9.30pm on Sunday.
Can you keep the shop open, officials here asked Mr Ng’s staff.
The South China Morning Post reported that an employee replied curtly:
‘Our boss said we would close at 2pm as usual. It is business. We cannot change it because someone important comes.’
Mr Ng’s shop opens between 6am and 2pm.
Then when the owner was tracked down, here’s his version:
Mr Ng, as it turns out, is a humble 70-year-old who even jumped in to help clean the 30 tables at his shop.
And he is sorry he could not accommodate Mr Tsang’s dining request. He said he would have done it if he had been given more advance notice.
‘It is difficult to find workers who are hardworking and have a good attitude now. If I scold them a little, they will threaten to leave.
‘But what can I do? I am old already and I can’t do everything by myself,’ he said with a sigh.
On his apparent snubbing of Mr Tsang, Mr Ng said: ‘Someone called on Saturday night to ask if we would be open on Sunday night.
‘One of my workers answered the call and told the person that we would be open only until 2pm.
‘On Sunday morning, we received a call from an official who asked if we could stay open that night as someone would be coming at 9.30pm.
‘My worker told the person that this was not possible. I was told only the night before. There was too little time to prepare.’
He said the shop is closed every Monday, when supplies are replenished. Usually by 2pm on Sundays, they would run out of all supplies.
‘I would also have to ask my workers if they are willing to work longer on Sunday,’ he added, saying that it was something he was not prepared to do.
‘They work from 4am until 2pm every day. They are very tired. It was also the weekend. I need to think about those who want to go home to spend time with their families,’ he said.
Mr Ng also said his worker had not been told by the official that the requests were made for Mr Tsang.
‘I knew who was coming only when some reporters from Hong Kong told me so around 1pm on Sunday afternoon,’ he said.
aiyor.. messy right? but has it affected his business?
So has the controversy affected his business?
Yes, for the better.
Mr Ng said: ‘Business actually went up 20 per cent but nobody has come up to me to ask me about the incident. They can see I’m just too busy.’
Now, if you have hear of stories like this what would your first impression be? an arrogant shop owner who because he has made it plays the game arrogantly? yeah i bet that’s what most of you would have thought. What about the ministry of foreign affair people? are they to blame?
come on, donald tsang, the NUMBER ONE man from Hong Kong being given such treatment. No, not treatment by the shop owner. BUT TREATMENT BY THE FOREIGN AFFAIRS. why? don’t tell me the foreign affair people did not know donald tsang will be in singapore. Don’t they even plan ahead? if donald tsang gets this sort of treatment, i wonder what would the leader of algiers will get if they visit. I mean how many would plan a supposedly important world leader’s dinner trip JUST ONE NIGHT before hand? i mean already our Malaysian clowns are bad. But this is seriously worth putting in the book that it will outdo any Malaysian ministry as a laughing stock. Since Singapore always laugh and say our government very slack, is this what Singaporeans pay their Million Dollar Foreign Affairs Minister to do the ultimate insult to a foreign leader?
I don’t think the blame is on the owner. The Foreign Affairs could step in and asked the workers to help. Investigate to see what can be done to minimise their screw up. They could have personally visited the place and ask for favours. But in their arrogant Armani suits, they won’t. Coz it would probably reek of dead pigs if they do.
So it is quite certain that in Singapore, you cannot write bad about the government coz you will be fired, like Mr Brown. But if the Minister made a BIG screw up like embarassing a FOREIGN leader, they are okay. This is truly the saga of a Bah Kut Teh. Worst is that the media from HK was given the WRONG impression thinking that the owner did not want to serve Donald Tsang when it was a true farked up by the ministry of foreign affairs. See how much role a media play in extending the news. If not for Fat4, you guys would probably think that the freaking owner damm arrogant right? now you know. The arrogance is in the foreign affairs not the owner.
