The rich tends to have power. Extract from original article:
So, disgruntled passengers fired off e-mail protests, reportedly filed a class-action suit and threatened a sit-in when the ship arrived in Rio.
And the Queen gave in to her rebellious, if not wealthy, subjects.
After initially offering a 50 per cent refund, Cunard Line which owns the ship, agreed to refund fares in full including airfare, for those who made the 12-day leg between New York and Rio .
Cruise experts say this is unusual as a change in intinerary, including skipping ports, is legal and no company is bound by law to give refunds.
Ah, the pleasures of being rich, a free trip even if you can pay for it.
Meanwhile Internet travel sites are buzzing over the irony.
‘I wouldn’t mind spending a month on QM2 without ports,’ sniffed Anne Campbell of CruiseMates.com
‘When they return home, I doubt their friends or family will show any more pity.’

the above article highlights how the rich people tend to have better say. Queen Mary 2 is absolutely a super ship which is almost brand new and super luxurious. So how can some people actually say that spending 12 days on the ship is a torture. by not accepting the 50% refund which is already generous by any measure would have meant that these rich people are very small gassed. they used methods to threaten the company that owned QM2 by suggesting a class action plus a sit in protest. was the three stops that important that they cannot tahan?
actually i am quite curious. If there is damage to the propellor it means that the ship could still stop. maybe difficult to manoveure into smaller ports. But if it anchors itself in the deep water and then use the smaller boats to send the tourists out on a recce trip, would have probably solved the problem. I am sure there is a lot more than meets the eyes from the short article. i remember during my trip to Halong Bay on star cruise, we didn’t disembark on any port. we use smaller boats to carry us around the national heritage park. Quite beautiful and then use the smaller boats to disembark on Halong Bay town area for shopping. I cannot see why they didn’t do that.
